After The Liposuction Operation

Postoperative Management

You will be required to spend 1 night in hospital following a liposuction (liposculpture)operation before being discharged home. You will be issued with a telephone number to ring in the event of a problem or query.

You are advised to rest for the first 24 to 48 hours after discharge from hospital. Initially, there is usually a degree of stiffness and discomfort but after this time you are encouraged to become more active.

We recommend that you wear an elastic garment for several weeks. The purpose of such a garment is to reduce bruising and swelling in the immediate postoperative period and in the longer term it will help to mould the tissues to their final resting shape. There is a wide variety of liposuction garments available for all areas of the body.

Showers and baths can be taken as early as the second day after liposuction (liposculpture). Apart from when washing, the support garment should be worn at all times in the first ten days. After that, it should be worn during the day for the next three weeks. Failure to wear a correctly fitted support garment can result in contour defects which may be difficult to correct afterwards.

Gentle massage of the treated areas should begin at about ten days after the liposuction operation.

You must attend a follow up appointment with the surgeon a week to ten days after your surgery for review and stitch removal.

Recovery & Results Following Liposuction

Recovery following liposuction (liposculpture) usually takes about a week to ten days depending on the amount of fat removed. It can take several months to attain the final shape depending on the healing properties of the individual.

Once the fat is removed it should not return. This is because fat cells have been removed from the area and the remaining fat cells in that area will not have the capacity to absorb sufficient fat in future to restore the previous large volume.

If the calorific intake is still exceeded after liposuction (liposculpture), fat will continue to be deposited in the body but only in those areas that were not operated on. You should still watch your weight carefully after liposuction. If a lot of weight is gained, the treated areas are prone to become lumpy and uneven.

Liposuction (liposculpture) is an extremely successful operation, which permanently removes unwanted pads of unsightly fat. This will give you increased confidence and happiness provided that all the necessary preoperative criteria are met.
