Q.     How long before I can appear in public?

A.    Most people are quite happy to appear in public straight away after the operation. Bruising and swelling can easily be hidden by wearing dark glasses and most patients will try and explain any swelling by informing the enquirer that they are suffering from an eye infection

Q.     What can go wrong?

A.    In expert hands serious complications are extremely rare and can be readily rectified.

Ectropion can occur when the skin of the lower eyelid is pulled downwards exposing the white of the eye below the pupil. Some degree of ectropion occurs in most cases afterwards and is due to the swelling of the lower lid which invariably occurs in all cases. The condition usually rights itself spontaneously but if severe, may require further surgery.

Q.     Can I go blind after the operation?

A.    It is extremely rare for this to happen but has been reported in the medical literature. It is currently thought that pressure on the artery that supplies the optic nerve (the nerve of sight) can reduce the blood flow through it to cause nerve damage. This can occur if an “orbital haematoma” (collection of blood behind the eye) develops post operatively, usually a few hours after surgery. If this occurs a further procedure will be necessary to decompress the orbit.
