FAQs
(Frequently Asked Questions about Dermabrasion Surgery)
In addition to the Dermabrasion queries outlined below, please refer to Factors Common to All Surgical Procedures.
Q. What are the unfavourable long term effects of a dermabrasion?
A. It is important to follow post operative instructions and to ensure that you take your antiviral treatment until healing has occurred.
Pigment changes can occur lasting several weeks. Initially the abraded area will appear pink and less pigmented than the surrounding skin. It may take up to 6 weeks to regain normal pigmentation. Final pigment adjustment can take several months. Rarely, abnormal pigmentation can be permanent.
Scarring can occur if a deep abrasion is performed requiring further treatment.
Q. Just how bad is the effect immediately after a dermabrasion?
A. You should be under no illusion that it is an insignificant appearance and be adequately prepared to cope with the unfavourable appearance of your face until healing has occurred. The deeper the abrasion the longer will be the healing process. In general you should be able to be comfortable about appearing in public after a week.
