After The Dermabrasion Operation
Postoperative Management
You will be discharged home shortly after a dermabrasion operation and be issued with a telephone number to ring in the event of a problem or query.
It is recommended that you sleep with your head and torso raised for the first few days to help reduce the swelling.
Any prescribed ointments should be applied meticulously as directed by the surgeon. After a few days the face can be washed three times daily with a soft cloth and lukewarm water. Pinkness, dryness and itching can be reduced with a mild anti-inflammatory lotion or cream.
It is important to avoid excessive straining, lifting, bending, intense sunlight or extremes of temperature or strong winds for six weeks. In addition it is vitally important to avoid contact with persons who have herpes simplex (fever blister or cold sores), shingles or chickenpox, impetigo or any other contagious skin disease.
Finally, it is extremely important to remember to stay out of the sunlight for 8 weeks as sun exposure can lead to unfavourable skin discolouration. A sun block is highly recommended in the aftermath of a dermabrasion.
You must attend a follow up appointment with the surgeon ten days after dermabrasion for review.
Recovery & Results Following Dermabrasion
The result of a successful dermabrasion operation can be extremely pleasing, especially if the original blemish was very noticeable. Despite the initial unpleasant appearance, after the first 24 to 48 hours, patients cope very well. The smooth, pink skin will gradually return to normal skin colour during the next six to eight weeks.
As the aim of treatment is improvement rather than total eradication of all the blemishes. The most common complaint after dermabrasion is that a few blemishes remain. Dermabrasion can be repeated, if necessary, when the skin has returned to its normal colour.
