Before The Dermabrasion Operation

Introduction to Dermabrasion

Skin resurfacing involves removing the superficial layer of the skin and allowing the raw skin beneath to heal itself. This stimulates the production of new collagen, which rejuvenates the skin, resulting in a smoother skin surface. During this process minor blemishes and scars are also removed.

Dermabrasion or “sanding” of the skin is a technique used in selected cases and sites to remove irregularities in the skin surface. Dermabrasion is performed by using a rotating wire brush or diamond wheel to plane down the irregular area. The smooth, even surface that results, produces an improved appearance.

The London Cosmetic Surgery Centre has successfully performed dermabrasion on many men in over 20 years.

Am I Suitable For Dermabrasion
?

Dermabrasion is very effective for the treatment of:

• Acne scarring
• Chicken pox marks
• Radial lip lines ( vertical creases around the lip)
• Fine lines and wrinkles (especially in the upper and lower lip regions and around the eyes)
• Superficial skin discolorations

Factors to Consider Before Dermabrasion

It must be emphasized that in severe acne scarring several procedures will be necessary over a period of time.

If you are prone to cold sores you will usually be prescribed a course of anti-cold sore (herpes simplex) medication. The medication is commenced the day before treatment and continued for five days. This is because a herpes simplex infection of the dermabraded skin can lead to scarring, which may require further treatment at a later date.

You will need to take a week off work after a dermabrasion operation.

The Dermabrasion Consultation

At the preoperative consultation for dermabrasion you will be asked to complete a medical questionnaire before you see the surgeon. After reviewing your medical history, the surgeon will specifically discuss the concerns that you have about your skin and what you wish to achieve with dermabrasion.

After examining you, the surgeon will outline what can be achieved with surgery and give you a detailed explanation of the dermabrasion procedure, the likely results and the usual course of postoperative events. It is important to realise that the skin, once treated, will seep fluid and the general appearance will be unsightly for a few days. The surgeon will also answer any questions that you may have about the dermabrasion operation.

At the end of your consultation, you will be issued with detailed written information about the dermabrasion operation which you are strongly advised to read carefully at home. If you have any further queries/concerns, these can be discussed with the surgeon at a further consultation.
